Kolkata: Puja is over, but the rains in Bengal haven’t stopped. The deep depression in the Bay of Bengal may have weakened, but its impact will still linger in many parts of Bengal. The Alipore Meteorological Department has clarified that intermittent rain will continue in South Bengal for the next three days. A warning of heavy to very heavy rain has been issued in North Bengal.
According to the Meteorological Department, the depression formed in the northwest and west-central Bay of Bengal reached landfall off the Gopalpur coast of Odisha on Thursday afternoon. At that time, its speed was approximately 17 kilometers per hour. This generated strong winds of 55 to 65 kilometers per hour along the Odisha coast, reaching up to 75 kilometers per hour in some places.
Due to the impact of this depression, rain is expected for at least three more days in the districts of South Bengal, including Kolkata. On Friday, heavy rains fell in South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Purulia, Bankura, West Burdwan, and Murshidabad. An orange alert for very heavy rain has been issued for Birbhum. Rainfall is expected to continue in some districts on Saturday. Thunderstorms may persist in Kolkata until Sunday.
The weather in North Bengal is set to worsen further. Very heavy rains are expected in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Malda from Friday to Sunday. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for these districts. Heavy rains are also expected in North and South Dinajpur until Sunday.
Sea winds in the Bay of Bengal are still blowing at speeds of 40 to 50 kmph, making the sea rough. The Meteorological Department has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea for at least 24 hours.
