Nipah Virus Symptoms: Early Warning Signs You Should Not Ignore

Two healthcare workers were infected by the Nipah Virus in Barasat in North 24 Parganas. Their samples have been sent at the Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory at AIIMS Kalyani, and preliminary reports indicate a possible Nipah infection, said a senior health official. The identified healthcare workers are told to be in serious condition.

Surveillance, contact tracing, and response systems have been activated by the central government in association with the West Bengal government health department.

What is Nipah Virus?

Nipah Virus is a virus that spreads between animals and people. The virus can be transmitted to humans from wild and domestic animals. The disease is very contagious as well as deadly, and it can spread through bodily fluids like saliva, poop, pee and blood.

It does mean that when the person under treatment for the virus coughs or sneezes, the caregiver could be affected with this. It has considerable epidemic or pandemic potential. So far there is no treatment or vaccine for Nipah virus. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and supporting the body through the illness.

Symptoms for Nipah Virus

Common symptoms for Nipah Virus disease may include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Respiratory discomfort
  • Dizziness and drowsiness

How To Prevent Nipah Virus Infection?

Health authorities urge people to follow these key preventive measures:

  • Practice regular handwashing and maintain good personal hygiene
  • Wash fruits thoroughly before consumption
  • Avoid eating fruits that may have been exposed to bats
  • Refrain from drinking raw palm sap
  • Avoid close contact with individuals showing symptoms of infection
  • Use appropriate protective measures when caring for sick persons
  • Seek prompt medical care if symptoms appear after possible exposure
