KOLKATA: China is going to participate in the 49th International Kolkata Book Fair 2026 after a gap of long fifteen years.
This is the first time since 2011 that China will be participating in this literary event. China accepted the invitation sent by the organizing body, the Guild, at the last minute and has formally confirmed its participation in the fair, informed Tridib Kumar Chattopadhyay, guild’s general secretary.
Addressing journalists Mr. Chattopadhyay said:
“China is participating in the Kolkata Book Fair again after 2011. Thet informed us about this at the last minute. We are extremely happy and extend them a warm welcome.”
It is to be noted that the United States (US) have skipped the esteemed Kolkata Book Fair 2026, as there is no funding for the participation. The US first entered the IKBF in 2006 and has been a regular participant since then. Their pavilion used to be a key attraction in the Kolkata Book Fair’s earlier edition.
Meanwhile, Chinese consulate in Kolkata have begun preparations for participation in the 49th International Kolkata Book Fair.
Reports said that China will not be constructing a huge pavilion but will instead be represented by a small stall. This step is considered significant as it aims to promote the exchange of literature and culture.
The stall is expected to be formally inaugurated soon by Xu Bei, the Chinese Consul General stationed in Kolkata.
