The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has informed the good news on the social media platform ‘X’ and congratulated the scientists.
Amidst changing weather patterns and natural disasters such as droughts and floods, agricultural scientists have done a remarkable job to make farming more sustainable.
The Chief Minister informed that these varieties have been developed through the joint efforts of scientists at the Drought Resistance Research Centre in Purulia and the Rice Research Centre in Chinsurah.

She said that all these varieties are well-suited to the state’s climate and will prove beneficial for farmers.
Four New Variants of Rice in West Bengal
Three of the new varieties—’Subhashini’, ‘Lachmanti’, and ‘Musafir’—have been developed for the drought-prone areas of the state’s western regions, such as West Midnapore, Purulia, and Bankura.
These varieties are capable of yielding 52 to 55 quintals per hectare during the Kharif season, ensuring good returns for farmers even in conditions of low rainfall.
Meanwhile, a variety called ‘Iravati’ has been developed for the flood-affected areas of South Bengal. This variety does not spoil even after prolonged waterlogging.
The Chief Minister stated that a total of 25 new crop varieties were developed in the state through research since 2011, including 15 varieties of rice.
This initiative is considered a significant step towards making agriculture more secure and profitable in the era of climate change, informed the Chief Minister.
