Kolkata/Darjeeling: According to the various reports at least 13 people have died in a landslide in Darjeeling following deadly rain overnight. Anand Bazar Patrika reported that at least nine people died when an iron bridge collapsed in Mirik. Four people died in Sukhia.

Reports claim that the iron bridge collapsed and Teesta water rose on the national highway cutting off Sikkim-Kalimpong completely from rest of the state. Rescue work is underway.

The Alipore Meteorological Department had earlier said that there will be rain in North Bengal. A warning of very heavy rain was issued in Darjeeling. Just like that, the rain started from Saturday night. The continuous rain has caused disaster till morning.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Karshiang) from Mirik said, “We have already recovered five bodies in Mirik. Two bodies were recovered earlier. I have heard about the death of four more people in Sukhia. Rescue work is underway. However, it is very difficult due to the weather. The road to Rohini is completely closed. The Dilaram side is also closed. We are trying to evacuate those who are stuck in Mirik. Residents are also being rescued.”

Later, the police confirmed the death toll of 13 people. The death toll may rise further.

According to local administration sources, a landslide has occurred on the road near Dilaram. The main road to Darjeeling is blocked due to this. Apart from this, the road leading to Kalimpong and Sikkim has been completely closed.

Meanwhile, the rain has affected wild animals as well. Reportes cited that animals are coming towards the villages from the forest. Two deer have been rescued. Several rivers are flowing above the danger level.

Rohini Road is a familiar name to those who visit Darjeeling. The condition of that road is also pathetic due to the rains on Saturday night. A part of the road has collapsed and fallen towards the river. A disaster advisory was issued by the GTA on Sunday morning. It said that Rock Garden and Tiger Hill are closed for tourists for the time being.

Tourists have been asked to be alert in the event of a disaster.
